What happens in a typical 1 hour Line Dance class?
On arrival
On arrival at the hall you will pay the entrance fee which is card preferred but I do carry a small float, if you have brought shoes to change into please do this prior to the class starting.
First Half
We will start off with some slower warm up dances (2-3). If a new dance is being taught (which isn’t every week) I will normally teach it during the first half of the session.
Second Half
We have a short 5 min break where you can have a drink and a quick chat with others. Second half of the session more dancing with a couple of slower dances to finish off.
A bit about me
How I got into line dancing
20 years ago I was queuing up waiting to attend my weekly Salsa class, and through the hall doors I saw a group of people dancing a dance I had never seen before… and this was the night my passion for line dance was born.
Was I apprehensive at my first class? Absolutely! Did it deter me? Definitely not! And 5 years ago that very same instructor that taught me that very first night, handed over the reigns to me to continue her passion of teaching people how to have fun by line dancing.
Over the years, I have ensured that I can continue to teach my passion by becoming BWDA qualified and Ballroom and Latin dance qualified with UKA dance which has brought me to where I am today… a passionate qualified line dancing instructor who can’t wait to pass on my love for dance to you all.
How I got into pilates
Covid lockdowns made a lot of people learn new skills like cooking or home exercise, but with all the constant sitting down I was doing, as everyone was, lower back pain developed and I was looking for some form of exercise that would provide some relief. After hours of research on the internet, Pilates was the winner and so the online classes began.
I grew to love Pilates as much as I do line dancing and started researching how I could help other people in need of the powers of Pilates. So I began my course and qualified as an APPI instructor through The Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute. I chose to train and qualify with APPI as it is a safe and effective way to practice Pilates for all levels of fitness and ability. It has been fully designed, taught, and developed by physiotherapists so has a strong focus on movement patterning and re-education.
I hope to see you at a class soon B x
Frequently Asked Questions about Line Dancing:
Wear flat shoes or boots that are comfortable, supportive and will give you the right amount of traction. Some dancers like a small heel. Leathered soled shoes are best, but not compulsory – especially for beginners. A pair of smooth gripped trainers will be fine. No high heels please as these will probably hurt your feet and damage the floor.
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Most dancers wear trousers/jeans with a t-shirt/top with a cardigan that can be removed. Your outfit is entirely up to you.
Payment card to pay your entrance fee and a small drink for the half time break.
It is a healthy pastime that promotes cardio vascular fitness, balance and coordination. It helps maintain good posture. It is a weight bearing activity, therefore, promotes bone growth and increases bone density which in turn helps reduce osteoporosis. There are social and emotional benefits with this pastime and many lifelong friendships are formed.
Line dancing is done by all ages check out the world dance masters, competitive line dancing is a growing hobby.
One of the best thing about line dancing is that you don’t need a partner. Come along meet new people and have fun dancing.
You will be fine at the absolute beginners class as the dances are easier and taught at a slow pace. The dances are broken down into sections so you can easily follow them. Please give it a go for at least 6 weeks as it takes time for you to get used to this new activity.
The dances will increase in difficulty/complexity. You start out with absolute beginner dances all the way up to advance dances. Any new steps along the way will be broken down as the dance is taught.
This should not stop you giving line dancing a try, an alternative move can be substituted for a turn, such as a chasse, walks, a lock step.
Frequently asked questions about Pilates:
Pilates is an ideal complement to all other forms of exercise. It works on lengthening and strengthening muscles and works the body from the inside out. You are continuously working to strengthen deep postural muscles it starts to build a healthier frame for your body reducing injuries caused by misuse or bad posture.
I am no expert in Yoga but my understanding is that Yoga focuses more on flexibility and broad muscle groups while Pilates focuses on muscle toning, body control, and core strength.
Yes, just your mat all other equipment will be provided.
Whatever you feel comfortable in that allows you to move freely, footwear is not important is Pilates is done either in bear feet or grippy socks.
Absolutely anyone calling themselves a Pilates instructor should be fully certified in all aspects of Pilates and be constantly attending training courses to keep his/her knowledge up to date as well as still continuing to work on their bodies. People are often surprised to learn that I still attend regular Pilates sessions. A good teacher should be happy to show their qualifications and insurance cover and never be embarrassed to ask where and when they qualified. Try to go to a class that has been recommended . Unfortunately there are people who claim to use Pilates exercises within their aerobics classes without any training. They run the risk of damaging you and the good name of Pilates.
